Do Scholarships Accept SAT Superscores?

The scholarship policy decides which result counts

By Mocklet · October 1, 2026

Some scholarships accept SAT superscores; others require a total from one test date. You need the policy for the scholarship itself. A university’s admissions rule does not automatically tell you which result its funding program will use.

A superscore combines the highest section results from different sittings when the institution allows it. That can change the total compared with any single test date, but it is not a score format every program accepts.

The same test history can be read differently

Consider a hypothetical student with Reading and Writing 700 plus Math 680 on one date, and Reading and Writing 660 plus Math 740 on another. Their single-date totals are 1380 and 1400. Combining the best sections gives 1440. This is an arithmetic illustration, not a scholarship decision.

If a program accepts that combination, it may evaluate 1440. If it requires one sitting, the student cannot simply enter the combined total as though it were an official single-date result. The policy therefore needs to be checked before matching a score to an award band.

Compare explicit scholarship policies

Alabama’s scholarship page says it does not use superscores and requires official SAT totals from a single test date. Ole Miss’s international scholarship page accepts superscores. Read Alabama’s rule and Ole Miss’s rule with the applicable award criteria.

The Alabama profile and Ole Miss profile help you keep those differences attached to the correct university. Avoid copying the more favorable policy from one program into another.

Receiving the score and using it are separate steps

Check how the university wants results submitted, which test dates it accepts and when reports must be received. A result available to you may not yet have been processed for scholarship consideration. Self-reporting in an application and sending the required official report are not always interchangeable.

Save confirmation of what you submitted and read the award notification. If a new result should change the relevant band, ask whether the scholarship has been reviewed using that result rather than assuming an update happened automatically.

Can a later result increase an award?

Texas Tech’s scholarship page permits consideration of upgrades based on improved scores or a superscore and states a documentation deadline before fall enrollment. It also publishes a separate GPA-based upgrade route. Check its current upgrade instructions and the Texas Tech profile for the applicable cycle.

An upgrade policy is program-specific. Do not assume every university will revise an award after admission, accept the same final test date or wait for a score report. A possible upgrade should remain separate from the award already confirmed in your budget.

Use the right number in your search

Keep both your best single-date total and any potential superscore in your notes. When exploring a university, choose the number its scholarship policy accepts. Then read the GPA and international-eligibility rules, because a higher accepted total still does not settle the whole award.

This makes further testing more purposeful: you know which section might matter, which programs could use the result and whether the timing still works. The next step is a program-specific plan, not a universal assumption that combining scores always helps.
